Understand what is being recommended
Ask the contractor to explain the finding in plain language. What needs attention? What work is proposed? Is the conversation about a specific repair, broader condition concerns, or a replacement you are considering for your own reasons?
Ask which conclusions come from an inspection and which questions still need to be checked. A general article, photograph or description over the phone cannot establish the condition of your particular system.
Put the options side by side
If both repair and replacement are options, ask for the scope of each in writing. Compare the work covered, the equipment involved, the proposed schedule and anything left out. If an option is not recommended, ask why.
- What would the proposed repair address?
- What concerns, if any, would remain afterward?
- What additional work would a replacement involve?
- What information is still needed before a firm proposal?
Do not treat an estimated equipment age as a diagnosis or assume every older system needs the same work.
Bring your plans for the house
Tell the contractor if you are planning an addition, changing how rooms are used or coordinating other renovation work. Explain your priorities, such as dealing with a specific repair or planning a replacement on a schedule you can prepare for.
Share previous invoices and recommendations if you have them. A written history helps keep the conversation grounded in the work actually performed instead of a best guess about past repairs.
Know what you are approving
Before authorizing work, confirm the agreed scope, any visit or diagnostic charge, payment terms and how changes to the job would be approved. Ask for clarification if a verbal explanation and the written estimate do not match.
Thibodeau’s offers free replacement estimates. That does not make every repair or service visit free. Call about your equipment, town and the kind of help you need, and confirm the details directly.
