Seasonal upkeep

Getting ready for a seasonal heating visit

A little preparation gives you a clearer conversation with the person servicing your heating system. You do not need to open equipment, adjust a burner or diagnose a problem to get ready.

Plan the appointment

ENERGY STAR recommends annual pre-season professional checkups, with heating checks in the fall. Confirm the appropriate service timing for your particular equipment with your heating contractor.

When you call, explain whether this is routine seasonal service or a specific concern. Ask what the visit covers, what it costs and which appointments are available. A replacement estimate and a maintenance visit are different requests.

Bring a short history

Find the last service invoice if you have it. Note any repairs since that visit and anything you want to discuss. If you have just moved in, whatever paperwork the previous owner left is a useful starting point; an incomplete history is still worth bringing.

  • Last known service date and any follow-up recommendation.
  • Make and model, if already recorded in your paperwork.
  • Rooms where you have noticed a comfort difference.
  • Questions you meant to ask at the previous visit.

Describe observations, not a diagnosis

Be specific about what you noticed and when. For example, ‘the upstairs room feels cooler in the morning’ gives the technician a starting point without assuming a cause. Mention whether the concern affects the whole home or only part of it.

This guide is appointment preparation, not troubleshooting. Leave covers, fuel connections, electrical parts and burner adjustments to a qualified professional. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for any routine homeowner care.

Confirm access and keep the paperwork

Ask what access is needed and whether someone should be home. Mention stairs, a narrow entrance, pets or other practical details that may affect the visit. Clear personal belongings from the access route without moving heating equipment or disturbing connections.

Before the visit ends, ask what was done, whether anything needs follow-up and when to discuss the next service. Save the invoice and recommendations together. Our printable checklist has space for those notes.
